Fantasizing Design: Phyllis Birkby Builds Lesbian Feminist Architecture (AIANY/Center for Architecture) explored the life and impact of ground-breaking lesbian architect Phyllis Birkby (1932–1994). Inspired by the women’s rights movement and gay liberation, Birkby joined one of the first lesbian feminist consciousness-raising groups, staged a feminist building occupation, and co-founded the Women’s School of Planning and Architecture. An artist project commission for the exhibition, “In the fantasy I am already there,” was a mixed media installation for the front gallery composed of quilted and carved textiles, fragments of poetry illuminated via neon, and wheatpasted blueprint paper printed with images, drawings, and writings drawing from the Phyllis Birkby archive. A flickering light box with an image of Birkby’s gravestone, which simply reads “Courage,” anchors the installation. Through combining blueprints and love letters, manifestos and mementos, and drawings and documents, a non-linear mosaic of Birkby’s life, friendships, entanglements, and desire is formed.
